[09:32:31] {nule} so chryslers are using CVTs now?
[09:32:52] {ormus} what chryslers, nule?
[09:32:55] {ormus} like…most?
[09:33:01] {ormus} not a fan of CVT myself
[09:33:03] {nule} i was looking at the caliber
[09:33:23] {ormus} although maybe they’ve gotten better…last one i was in was an early 00′s mini
[09:33:44] {nule} dunno
[09:34:04] {baal} I like the DSG in my buddies GLI
[09:34:23] {baal} not quite the same thing, but same feeling iirc
[09:36:08] {ormus} hrm
[09:36:11] {ormus} dsg
[09:36:16] {ormus} never heard of it
[09:36:20] {ormus} but if it’s german…
[09:36:22] {baal} err
[09:36:40] {baal} DSG == how F1 rolls
[09:37:01] {nule} oh
[09:37:08] {nule} dsg is what the minis use now
[09:37:16] {nule} continuously variable is totally different
[09:37:29] {nule} dsg = direct shift gearbox
[09:37:35] {baal} yes, same feeling though
[09:37:49] {nule} i don’t see how that’s possible,
[09:38:53] {baal} you “don’t feel it shift”
[09:39:03] {baal} felt the same to me, still drives like an auto
[09:40:03] {nule} haven’t driven either, so i take you word for it
[09:40:31] {baal} even with the dsg, you would swear it’s an auto
[09:40:35] {baal} because it’s set up exactly the same
[09:40:44] {baal} put in drive, mash gas
[09:40:45] {nule} i know they’re usually very fast to shift
[09:40:55] {nule} less mush than a hydrodynamic too
[09:41:01] {baal} _far_ less
[09:41:05] {nule} yeah
[09:41:19] {baal} when they first released them in the VW’s the 0-60 times in the dsg were faster than a manual
[09:41:25] {baal} (still are too)
[09:41:32] {nule} i believe it
[09:41:58] {baal} anyhow, that car was fun to drive
[09:42:00] {nule} wiki says the dsg can shift in 8ms when the ect properly predicts the engine speed
[09:42:26] {nule} i’m still digging the HHR the most of the cars i’m browsing through
[09:42:38] {ormus} hrm
[09:42:46] {ormus} “auto” doesn’t mean i don’t feel it shift
[09:43:08] {nule} but that $3500 rebate from my GM card is somewhat to blame
[09:43:34] {baal} heh
[09:43:39] {ormus} get a viper, nule
[09:43:42] {baal} I think I’d be ok with a GM
[09:43:46] {nule} i’ve driven a viper
[09:43:51] {nule} i never want to again
[09:43:51] {baal} but I wouldn’t be buying a chrysler or a ford
[09:43:55] {ormus} could totally see nule kicking it in a viper…
[09:43:59] {ormus} …in the passenger seat…
[09:44:01] {ormus} …as i drove…
[09:44:11] {nule} i could totally see me eating a telephone pole in a viper
[09:44:15] {nule} …in the passenger seat…
[09:44:16] {ormus} hrmph
[09:44:20] {nule} …as ormus drove…
[09:44:24] {ormus} where’s your sense of adventure, nule?

the thing about gif

[11:17:18] {ormus} wow
[11:17:27] {ormus} heh…that hacked up web page actually validates
[11:17:44] {ormus} suckers!
[11:29:07] {ormus} hey baal:
[11:29:10] {ormus} One of the issues surrounding the GIF format is that the LZW algorithm was protected in the USA by a patent held by the company Unisys. The Unisys LZW patent expired in the USA on June 20, 2003. LZW patents are expired in Canada, France, Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Japan.
[11:39:03] {nule} LZW isn’t expired everywhere yet.
[11:39:32] {nule} And I think the bigger issue is that PNGs are technically better, unless you want to do the gif98a animation.
[11:40:07] {ormus} yeah, seems like pngs are better in about every way
[11:40:12] {ormus} compress better, too, evidently
[11:40:29] {baal} yep
[11:40:31] {baal} png is good
[11:40:33] {baal} ™
[11:40:50] {ormus} uhoh…there goes the neighborhood…
[11:40:50] {baal} freaking unisys
[11:40:54] * baal hates unisys
[11:41:03] {ormus} *baal stabs unisys
[11:41:53] {baal} gee, thanks ormus
[11:42:01] * baal stabs unisys again for good measure

closer to the cosmos

[16:02:24] {ormus} i have an article out of popsci i plan on giving you, nule
[16:02:29] {ormus} about next-gen telescopes
[16:02:39] {ormus} unreal, man
[16:02:55] {nule} like research class scopes?
[16:03:10] {ormus} yes
[16:03:32] {ormus} like hubble^10^3
[16:03:48] {nule} ah
[16:03:55] {ormus} i found the article fascinating
[16:04:09] {nule} yeah
[16:04:20] {ormus} “they” say with hubble’s successor they should be able to see to the edge of the universe
[16:04:28] {ormus} or, rather, the light from the most distant galaxy
[16:04:57] {ormus} the scope can detect a galaxy emitting only a few photons an hour
[16:05:08] {nule} i’d be happy with something that could pick up planets from other stars
[16:05:10] {ormus} don’t get me started…anyway, i’ll pass it on to you, eventually
[16:05:12] {ormus} ah
[16:05:17] {ormus} they address that, too
[16:05:20] {ormus} different scope, though
[16:05:27] {ormus} the first one i was talking about is IR
[16:05:38] {ormus} it’ll orbit LaGrange 2, about a million miles from earth
[16:05:44] {ormus} to get it away from the heat
[16:05:45] {nule} nice
[16:05:50] {ormus} another one will be a planet spotter
[16:06:00] {ormus} ground-basd
[16:06:02] {ormus} *based
[16:06:27] {ormus} all these in the next 4-8 years, too, for the most part
[16:07:08] {ormus} one will be buried in artic ice, looking for high energy neutrinos
[16:07:09] {nule} that’s cool
[16:07:11] {ormus} pretty wild…
[16:07:18] {ormus} so did you have a good weekend?
[16:07:23] {nule} it was aiight
[16:07:32] {ormus} mine was very relaxing

[13:36:02] * nule does a little chathot jig
[13:43:03] * nule walks around the chatroom on his hands
[13:46:55] {baal} BANG
[13:51:07] {maximus} heh
[13:51:11] {maximus} you guys are such cards
[13:51:40] * maximus shuffles the deck
[13:52:04] {maximus} well, now that i’m back in mexico and hate everyone again…
[13:52:07] *** maximus is now known as Zeromus.
[13:52:12] {Zeromus} bwa ha ah ahah
[13:55:02] {nule} ugh
[13:55:11] *** nule is now known as nulemus.
[13:55:41] * Zeromus hands nulea beer
[13:56:05] * Zeromus hands nulemus a beer
[13:59:49] * Zeromus chugs a keg of health
[13:59:51] *** baal is now known as Sephiroth.
[13:59:55] * Zeromus loses 500 HP
[14:00:04] {Zeromus} i almost took that name sephiroth
[14:00:18] *** Sephiroth is now known as Atma.
[14:00:21] {nulemus} oh no
[14:00:25] {nulemus} look what you’ve done
[14:00:29] *** nulemus is now known as nulenator.
[14:00:31] {nulenator} I’m back
[14:00:39] {Zeromus} oooh… Atma Weapon
[14:00:42] *** Zeromus is now known as Ruby.
[14:00:49] *** Atma is now known as Rubicant.
[14:01:14] * nulenator nulenates everyone who keeps changing their name to something dumb
[14:01:19] {Rubicant} oh, incidently minimus
[14:01:26] {Rubicant} found out a bit of history the other day you might like
[14:01:29] *** Rubicant is now known as baal.
[14:01:43] * nulenator pulls up a chair and prepares for story time
[14:01:47] *** Ruby is now known as maximus.
[14:01:54] * maximus curls up in a blanket next to nule
[14:02:03] {maximus} what’s that baal?
[14:02:30] {baal} Masamune was actually a person
[14:02:35] {baal} as was Muramasa
[14:02:40] {nulenator} well, duh
[14:02:54] {maximus} interesting
[14:02:57] {baal} yeah
[14:03:04] {baal} Masamune was a sword-maker in the 1300′s
[14:03:13] {baal} Muramasa came later, in the 1500′s
[14:03:21] {baal} their blades are often considered opposates
[14:03:27] {maximus} how so?
[14:03:45] {baal} Masamunes blades are considered swords of peace
[14:04:05] {baal} muramasas were notoriously deadly, and considered evil
[14:04:24] {maximus} so swinging both of them is kind of a paradox
[14:04:29] {baal} there was a legend that said that once a muramasa katana was drawn, it had to spill blood before it returned to it’s scabbard
[14:04:31] {maximus} I always thought Edge was a little iffy
[14:04:58] {maximus} bbl
[14:07:17] * nulenator already knew all that stuff
[14:08:17] {baal} yeah yeah
[14:08:23] {baal} :)
